Het Collegiaal Bestuur van de Oud-Katholieke Kerk van Nederland is geschokt door het bericht van de arrestatie van priester Nico Sarot door de politie in Cambodja, waar hij op vakantie was. Volgens de berichten die ons vanochtend bereikten zou er op zijn digitale camera en iPad kinderporno zijn aangetroffen. De bisschop van Haarlem, onder wiens pastorale bevoegdheid Sarot als priester werkt, heeft hem in afwachting van verdere ontwikkelingen met onmiddellijke ingang geschorst als luchthavenpastor op Schiphol en als dienstdoend geestelijke in de Oud-Katholieke Kerk van Nederland. De kerk verleent zoveel als zij kan medewerking aan een onderzoek naar de beschuldigingen tegen priester Sarot en zet zich in voor een eerlijke rechtsgang.
Noch vanuit de parochie waar priester Sarot werkte, noch vanuit het bestuur van het Schiphol-luchthavenpastoraat zijn signalen gekomen die aanleiding gaven tot vermoedens betreffende vermeend seksueel misbruik door priester Sarot.
De Oud-Katholieke Kerk van Nederland is lid van het oecumenische initiatief ‘Seksueel misbruik in pastorale relaties’ (SMPR). In de opleiding en nascholing van de geestelijken hanteert zij de nodige preventieve maatregelen ter bescherming van kinderen en kwetsbaren in pastorale relaties en kent een procedure voor de behandeling van klachten.

The Bishops, priests and lay members of the Executive Committee of the Old Catholic Church of the Netherlands are shocked by the announcement of the arrest of priest Nico Sarot by the Cambodian police, while on holiday in Cambodia.
According to the news we received this morning, photographic material identified as child pornography was said to be found on his digital camera and iPad. The Bishop of Haarlem, under whose pastoral oversight Nico Sarot works, suspended him with immediate effect both as an airport pastor at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and as a licensed minister in the diocese of Haarlem, pending further developments. The church grants as much cooperation as possible towards investigations into the accusations against priest Sarot, and pleads for a fair trial.
No previous signals had been received that have given rise to suspicions of sexual abuse by priest Sarot, either from the parish where he used to work, or from the board of the Schiphol Airport pastoral team.
The Old Catholic Church of the Netherlands is a member of the ecumenical initiative ‘Sexual abuse in pastoral relations’ (SMPR). In ministerial education and training, the church applies the necessary preventive measures to protect children and vulnerable adults in pastoral relationships, and participates in an ecumenically agreed procedure for handling complaints.
